They were powered by an internal combustion engine and invented by a French industrialist named Edouard Delamare-Debouteville. His car was patented in 1884 but failed to gain commercial success. However, several replicas of his cars have been made and entered into various events.


The Otto automobile was a revolutionary invention that revolutionized the way engines are made. Otto was a gunsmith by training before pursuing a career in engineering. He spent many years in factories across Europe and eventually joined the Deutz works as the technical director. He brought along his protege, Wilhelm Maybach, who would go on to be a great engine designer. By the time of his death, more than thirty thousand Ottos had been built.
