Entertaiment

The word entertains, as in the fall 2011 issue of Transformational Entertainment News, comes from the Medieval Latin intertenere, which means “to hold inside.” It’s also an abbreviation for TEN, an acronym for the Indo-European root ten, meaning to stretch.

From there, we get the sense of an agreeable or diverting occupation for the mind: a crossword puzzle is a common form of entertainment. Entertaiment can also refer to hospitable provision for the wants and needs of guests or visitors.

What one person or group may find entertaining can be considered a waste of time by another.
