Automobiles

Automobiles are a type of wheeled motor vehicle, typically four-wheeled and powered by an internal combustion engine using a volatile fuel. Almost all automobiles use a transmission to convert engine power into usable torque for driving the wheels. The engine may be gasoline (carburetor internal combustion), diesel, electric, or gas turbine. Automobiles may be powered by either 4-wheel drive or 2-wheel drive and can be used to transport passengers, freight, and equipment. There are many benefits of owning an automobile, including increased mobility, safety, and convenience. Unlike other forms of transportation, automobiles can be used to travel long distances, and can easily carry more than one person or large amounts of luggage. Automobiles are also much faster than walking or riding a bicycle, and can often reach places where public transport cannot.

The modern automobile has become a complex technical system with numerous subsystems that have specific design functions. Some of these subsystems include an engine, transmission, chassis, bodywork, control systems, electrical equipment, and service devices. The modern automotive industry is very highly developed and competitive, and there are a number of world-class producers. Some of the largest manufacturers are located in Japan, USA, France, the Republic of Korea, Germany, Brazil, and Italy.

In the early 1900s, Karl Benz designed and patented the first modern automobile, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, with a four-stroke, internal combustion, gasoline engine. It was followed in 1906 by Ransom E. Olds’s one-cylinder, three-horsepower, tiller-steered, curved dash Oldsmobile, which was essentially a motorized horse buggy.

Henry Ford’s introduction of the moving assembly line and Model T in 1910 revolutionized automobile production. He standardized features and prices to make cars affordable to the general American public. By the mid-1960s, Detroit’s era of annually restyled road cruisers with questionable aesthetics, high operating costs, and poor quality had come to an end, as escalating gas prices and environmental concerns eroded demand for such vehicles.
